This especially, when you talk about loudspeakers, where there is often a cost reduction for the crossover inductors. This results in distortion and power loss. High End loudspeaker manufacturers overcome this problem by using foil coils, where the copper is flat instead of round. If you take a 1.6mm² copperwire and roll it flat, the copper surface area becomes 12 times larger.
And why is this an advantage?
We know with rising frequency the electrons will reach for the surface. This phenomenon is known as powerdistortion. This is, why we need as large a surface, as we can get, so the electrons,, said in a popular way, do not get squeezed on their way.
Jantzen Cross-Coil has been developed in cooperation with Audio Technology, who manufactures High-End speakers for the European and US market.
Cross-Coils are made in 3 european sizes:
Coppertape width 47 mm gives 3.29 mm² (12 AWG)
30 mm gives 2.10 mm² (14 AWG)
19 mm gives 1.33 mm² (16 AWG)
Cross Coils give your loudspeakers ballast in pure copper weight without giving you the resistance, you would expect, i.e. 12 AWG 2,70 mH (1.82 kg Cu) has only got RDC 0,330 Ohm and 14 AWG 2,70 mH (1.03 kg Cu) has the RDC 0,445 Ohm.
The disadvantage of foil inductors have until now been the price. But with Jantzen Audio´s new production methods and special constructed machinery, the price has been drastically reduced.
Every single Jantzen Cross Coil goes through a special developed Jantzen Anti-oxidant Treatment and Measurement, which guarantees a long life top performance.
A hard-wood core makes it possible to wind the coils extra close. This results in very low magneto shrinking factor and virtually zero FM distortion. This is very close to the "ideal inductor" in all respect. The tolerance is +/-3%, where the normal industry standard is set at +/-5%. Copper purity is 99,99%.
This product is also an eminent opportunity to upgrade your existing loudspeaker systems taking into consideration, that Cross Coil sustains as follows: 350 watts RMS for 16 gauge, 500 watts RMS for 14 gauge and 650 watts RMS for 12 gauge.
Some parasitic capacity occurs in the foil coils, but at a very low level measured in nano- or pico Farad.
