오늘 아침은 라디오에서
흘러나오는 Jean Redpath가 부르는 메기의 추억 때문에 시간을 다 보냈습니다.
왜 원곡의 가사와 다르게
부를까? 단순한 이 호기심 때문이었습니다. 이리저리 인터넷을 뒤지고... 번역하고...
혹시 내용이 틀리는 곳이

이 곡을 스코틀랜드
민요쯤으로 생각하는 사람이 상당히 많다. 곡의 분위기도 그렇거니와 애절한 가사도 그렇다.
하지만 실제로는 캐나다
온타리오주 어느 마을의 실제 사건을 노래로 만든 것이다.
메기의 추억을 가장 잘
부른다는 Jean Redpath의 곡은 이를 스코틀랜드화 한 느낌이 든다. 가사의 내용은 두 젊은
남녀가 어릴 때 사랑의
약속을 실천하지 못하고 나중에 애뜻한 마음으로 후회하는 마음을 노래하고 있다. 실제의
사건에서는 주인공인
Maggie(Margaret Clark)은 이 곡의 작사자인 남편(George Washington Johnson)과 사랑에
빠질 때부터 앓고 있던
결핵으로 결혼 후 죽게된다. 남편은 Maggie가 죽고난 후 애뜻한 마음을 시로 적어 J.A.
Butterfield란
작곡가에게 의뢰하여 이곡을 만들 게 된다.
